Wells Fargo’s (WFC) financial results disappointed investors but could be good news for PNC Financial Services (PNC), Fifth Third (FITB), KeyCorp (KEY) and Comerica (CMA).
Bloomberg NewsNomura’s Bill Carcache and Yuman Lui explain why:
Loan growth trends were solid. WFC total core loan growth came in at 6.9% YoY, up from 5.6% last quarter. Core commercial loan growth accelerated to 8.0% YoY, up from 5.4% last quarter. The strength in WFC commercial loan portfolio bodes well for other regional banks, given high C&I growth correlations (i.e., ~80% or higher) with…USB, MTB…RF, and HBAN. Total loan growth correlations also exceed 90% for PNC Financial Services, Fifth Third, KeyCorp, and Comerica. As wee noted, the R-squared between earning asset growth and NII growth is 98% for regional banks, suggesting that stronger loan growth will lead to positive EPS revisions.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
The problem, though, is that Micron needs to boost its prospects if it wants to stand up to its competition. Use of flash memory and solid-state memory drives has greatly increased demand for memory generally, and rivals are working hard to make their own inroads into trying to maximize that demand as long as it lasts. SanDisk (NASDAQ: SNDK ) has not only come out with its own solid-state drives but has also teamed up with hard-disk drive giant Western Digital to produce hybrid solid-state hard-disk drives that combine the benefits of solid-state memory with the cost-effectiveness of traditional hard drives. Even Rambus (NASDAQ: RMBS ) has soared to almost two-year highs thanks to a recent victory in getting SK Hynix to settle a patent dispute with the company, helping Rambus to ease the sting of having lost its major suit against Micron last year.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Geoff Gannon]
Here, you want to compare the return on the company's buyback with the return you could achieve. However, you want to keep in mind that while you would pay a tax on the dividend the company does not pay a tax on the buyback. Let's say I imagine John Wiley (JW.A) will get a 10% return on its buyback. Likewise, I think I can go out and return 10% a year myself picking my own stocks. In this case, which should I prefer? Should I prefer John Wiley paid a dividend or used all of its free cash flow to buyback stock?

Notice that 4 of those 10 stocks have a market cap under $100 million. This is shocking. I ranking the companies by years of positive earnings (special items which explain H&R Block losses are excluded). If a company earns money for several decades this group has tended to be profitable for over 30 years and it retains that money, it will end up with a big market cap.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Aimee Duffy]
Master limited partnerships are not like other stocks, and the metrics we use to compare an MLP to its peers differ from the metrics we use to compare regular companies. For example, instead of the traditional P/E ratio, we emphasize MLP-specific metrics like distribution coverage ratio, and today's focus: price to distributable cash flow (P/DCF). I'll use MPLX (NYSE: MPLX ) , Tesoro Logistics (NYSE: TLLP ) , and Holly Energy Partners (NYSE: HEP ) as our three examples.

A smart investment
Short-sellers have been out in full force this month in Kimco Realty (NYSE: KIM ) , a real estate investment trust that has owned interests in 895 shopping centers across North, Central, and South America. The selling has been particularly noticeable ever since Kimco announced it was purchasing a partner's stake in 70 shopping centers via two portfolios -- the Kimco Income Fund I and Kimco Income REIT joint venture for $67 million. Investors may not be thrilled with this purchase, but I'm certainly not doing any complaining.

Shares of LIN Media LLC (NYSE: LIN) got a boost, shooting up 30.67 percent to $28.08 after Media General (NYSE: MEG) announced its plans to buy Lin Media LLC for $1.6 billion.

One newspaper player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Media General (MEG), which is a provider of news, information and entertainment across 18 network-affiliated television stations, digital media and mobile platforms, serving consumers and advertisers in strong local markets, primarily in the Southeastern U.S. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 253%.
If you take a look at the chart for Media General, you'll notice that this stock is spiking higher right above its 50-day moving average of $13.57 a share. That 50-day for MEG has held as support for the last five months. This spike is quickly pushing shares of MEG within range of entering breakout and new 52-week-high territory.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MEG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $15.39 to its 52-week high at $15.67 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 188,023 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then MEG will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $20 to $23 a share.
Traders can look to buy MEG off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $13.57 a share. One can also buy MEG off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
