Advisors' Opinion:- [By GURUFOCUS]
Following the acquisition of Maverick, I quickly rolled my profits into Long Star Technologies (formerly LSS) which at the time was Maverick chief rival. Lone Star was subsequently acquired by US Steel (X) approximately one year later. In retrospect, I believe I was extremely fortunate to have the company taken out at that time, since I doubt if I would have sold out of my position in Lone Star any time soon. - [By Alex Planes]
Over the preceding two years, factory production had grown 26%, compared to employment gains of 14%. However, Hazlitt found that by 1936, production was at 78% of its 1929 levels, while employment was at 80%! The technological argument didn't hold much water in the 1930s. Even a simple comparison of U.S. Steel's (NYSE: X ) production against its employee headcount showed a greater loss of production than of employment: The bellwether steelmaker had rolled out less than half as much steel in 1935 as it had in 1929, but total employment was a mere 13% lower from the peak of the boom to 1935. Perhaps the first argument was more valid than the second.

Big U.S. steel makers like Nucor (NYSE: NUE ) , U.S. Steel (NYSE: X ) , and AK Steel (NYSE: AKS ) have long complained about foreign steel being dumped into the U.S. market. China has been one of the more contentious issues on that front. Although the Chinese government has said it wants to reign in its steel industry, it may have a harder time than it hopes.

Now, however, nearly every major auto maker has come out with new SUVs, hybrid SUVs, and vehicles with improved fuel efficiency and the cargo space and safety characteristics of traditional SUVs. Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Fiat (FIATY) Chrysler all have their sights set on capturing even more of the growing SUV market, as do Japanese auto giants Honda (HMC), Toyota (TM) and Nissan (NSANY).

If you're a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you're a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I've got in Jubak's Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They're the world's largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.

Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: OREX), like Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc (NASDAQ: ARNA), EnteroMedics Inc (NASDAQ: ETRM) and VIVUS, Inc (NASDAQ: VVUS), is a speculative small cap obesity drug stock that has the potential for coming up with the next big thing in the treatment of obesity that is increasingly a global problems. I should mention that we have recently added Orexigen Therapeutics to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as an extremely speculative biotech bet because itslead obesity drug candidate has the potential to beapproved by September 11th of this year.

Texas Rare Earth Resources Corp., formerly Standard Silver Corporation, incorporated on July 29, 1970. a mining company engaged in the business of the acquisition and development of mineral properties. As of August 31, 2012, it held a nineteen year lease to explore and develop a 950 acre rare earth uranium-beryllium prospect located in Hudspeth County, Texas known as Round Top and prospecting permits covering an adjacent 9,345 acres.
The Company principal focus will be on developing a metallurgical process to concentrate or otherwise extract the metals from the Round Top rhyolite. In addition to the Round Top Project, the Company also own title to 12 unpatented mining claims, the Macho group, comprising 240 acres covering the Old Dude Mine, located in Sierra County, New Mexico. Another 18 unpatented mining claims and fractional claims, the HA group, consisting 274 acres cover an andesite hosted vein system similar to and some 10 miles to the southwest of the Macho District.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jake Mitchell]
As a speculative play on the industry, I came across Texas Rare Earth Resources (TRER.PK), which is principally focused on its 950 acre Round Top project. A Preliminary Economic Assessment by an independent third party found that there are an estimated over 1 billion metric tonnes of resources containing over 1 billion pounds of rare earth elements. A revised PEA, which was originally projected to have a capital cost of $2.1 billion is now estimated to be between $150 million to $350 million. A key concern in the exploration of these mines is how expensive it is to ultimately extract the rare earths from the ground. If Texas Rare Earth is able to show evidence that cost has been significantly reduced it will be the target of interested parties globally.

ABB (NYSE: ABB ) is spending $1 billion to buy Power-One (NASDAQ: PWER.DL ) , a major player in solar inverters. This is the latest move by a large energy company to buy into solar following Total (NYSE: TOT ) and General Electric (NYSE: GE ) . Will we see more solar buyouts? Erin Miller sat down with Fool contributor Travis Hoium to find out.

What's more, Kaydon addresses markets that investors believe are getting stronger, and I should have realized that the market would pay up for that. More than 20% of the company's revenue comes from power generation, and roughly another 25% from automation/robotics and aerospace (not to mention an additional 5% from medical). As I've been pretty bullish on the prospects for companies like General Electric (GE), ABB (ABB), and Honeywell (HON) in those markets, maybe I should have anticipated that the market would assign a higher multiple (particularly with larger companies flush with cash and willing to do tuck-in/bolt-on deals).
