Best Forestry Stocks To Own For 2015

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Trading stocks that trigger major breakouts can lead to massive profits. Once a stock trends to a new high or takes out a prior overhead resistance point, then it's free to find new buyers and momentum players who can ultimately push the stock significantly higher.

>>5 Dividend Stocks That Want to Pay You More in 2014

One example of a successful breakout trade I flagged on May 30 at $14.30 a share was 3D printing player Voxeljet (VJET). I mentioned in that piece the stock had been consolidating and trending sideways for a few weeks, with shares moving between its 52-week low of $12.85 on the downside and right around $15 on the upside. This stock was starting to bounce higher off its 52-week low and was quickly moving within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Guess what happened? Shares Voxeljet triggered that breakout in mid-June with strong upside volume flows. This stock took out the upper-end of that previous range and it spiked back above its 50-day moving average. Shares of VJET have continued to soar higher since triggering that breakout, with the stock tagging an intraday high today of $19.75 a share. That represents a large gain of close to 40% for anyone who bought shares of VJET in anticipation of the breakout. As you can see, trading breakouts that triggering with strong volume and produce large profits in very short timeframes.

Corporate Profits ‘Dangerously’ High; Labor to Grab Bigger Share: Research Affiliates

Profits over the past couple of decades have inflated to bubble-like record highs, and investors should expect them to decelerate or even decline over the next couple of decades.

That gloomy long-term forecast comes from Research Affiliates’ Chris Brightman in the Rob Arnott-led firm’s recent newsletter, but the profit warning comes with an unusual political twist:

Much of Brightman’s analysis emphasizes that today’s high level of corporate profits violates people’s sense of social fairness, accounts for rising populism and all but assures that “corporations’ labor, interest and tax expenses [will] rise faster than sales over the next couple of decades” while profits decline.

10 Best Semiconductor Stocks To Own For 2016

The profits bubble discussion comes at a time when the stock market hovers near its all-time high after a long bull run, leading many commentators to think a correction is overdue, while some bulls, like Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel, argue that corporate earnings fully justify today’s stock market valuations.

But what gives Siegel reason to celebrate is cause for deep concern on Brightman’s part. Profits, he warns, are “dangerously” elevated, with S&P 500 real earnings per share far above trend, profit margins at or near record levels and profits as a percentage of GDP and relative to labor income at or near all-time highs.

Capital’s share of income relative to wage earners seems socially unsustainable, he says, predicting that “social and political forces, if not economic developments, will cause it — sooner or later — to revert to a more usual level.”

Brightman, head of investment management for the Newport Beach, Calif.-based indexing firm Research Affilliates, warns that investment professionals should beware the human tendency to uncritically assume that the future will accord with the conditions they have known in their careers.

While “a multi-decade period of zero or negative growth in real earnings per share” needed to reduce corporate profits’ share of GDP may seem preposterous to many, history is replete with examples of sustained profit weakness, he says—the 1970s and 1980s being the most recent.

Brightman points out that the most recent profit bubble to end badly, in 2007, may now be exceeded by 2013 in real earnings per share (EPS) terms, and our current profits boom may now be the second highest in history.

The record holder, in 1916, was followed by a 39-year lull till the next profits peak in 1955, and Brightman points out that two world wars and a Great Depression came in the intervening years.

Brightman traces the current profits explosion to the effect of globalization that started in the 1990s, when quite suddenly China, India, Russia, Eastern Europe, South America and Southeast Asia added 3 billion people to the decades-long stasis during which North America, Europe and a few other countries lived amid economic and technological plenty.

That “seismic shift” quadrupled the advanced economy’s labor force, thus dramatically lowering global poverty while at the same time causing wage stagnation in the old advanced economies — all while bolstering corporate profits to near record levels.

Brightman argues that “corporate capture of government policy” has greatly facilitated globalization and its accompanying profits inflation.

“Rent seeking may be more extreme within our very own financial industry than in any other,” he says, citing the Troubled Asset Relief Program and quantitative easing as prime examples of government policy that has benefited corporate interests.

“For several decades, under governments led by both parties, the close nexus between Wall Street and Washington has facilitated an economic policy that favors politically savvy corporations and too-big-to-fail megabanks,” he writes, noting the “sheer coincidence” between government policy and the Street’s large campaign contributions.

The investment industry exec takes pains to state his appreciation of “business success” and abhorrence of “government meddling in the economy,” but in a rhetorical style not usually found in investment letters adds:

“Because globalization and corporatist economic policies seem to have unfairly tilted the scales against lower skilled workers in developed countries, we sympathize with the growing political pressure to subsidize the creation of low-skill jobs, to  improve the skills and wages of the less proficient, and provide a living wage to the working poor.”

The Research Affiliates head of investment management foresees a decades-long profits bust, emphasizing the growing role of political change in economic policy:

“We cannot predict the quarter or year when profits will peak," he says. "We can predict the catalyst. The share of corporate profits is a political choice.”

10 Best Defense Stocks To Own Right Now

HARTFORD, Connecticut (AP) United Technologies says it may furlough more than 5,000 workers if the government shutdown continues into next month.

The company said Wednesday that its Sikorsky division, which makes Black Hawk helicopters, would be hit first. It expects nearly 2,000 employees, including those employed at facilities in Connecticut, Florida and Alabama, will be furloughed Monday.

The Hartford, Conn.-based manufacturer said it would halt some defense manufacturing because government inspectors themselves have been furloughed. That leaves it without the necessary federal approvals to make military products.

If the shutdown continues through next week, the furloughs would extend to its Pratt & Whitney and UTC Aerospace Systems division, bringing the total number of employees on hold up to 4,000. That number could exceed 5,000 if the shutdown stretches into next month.

10 Best Defense Stocks To Own Right Now: Implant Sciences Corp (IMSC.PK)

Implant Sciences Corporation (Implant Sciences), incorporated in August 31,1984, develops, manufactures and sells sensors and systems for the security, safety and defense (SS&D) industries. Its technologies are used worldwide in security and inspection applications. Implant Sciences has developed technologies used in explosives trace detection (ETD), and and narcotics trace detection (NTD) applications and market and sell handheld ETD and benchtop ETD and NTD systems that use its technologies. The systems are used by private companies and Government agencies to screen baggage, cargo, vehicles, other objects and people for the detection of trace amounts of explosives. Implant Sciences have developed explosives detection systems designed for use in aviation and transportation security, high threat facilities and infrastructure, military installations, customs and border protection, and mail and cargo screening. The systems use the Quantum Sniffer technologies, including photon-based, non-radioactive ion source in combination with ion mobility spectrometry, a detection tool sensitive to the speeds with which ions of various substances move through the air to electronically detect minute quantities of explosives vapor and particles.

Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector

The Quantum Sniffer QS-H150 Portable Explosives Detector employs a vortex collector for the simultaneous detection of explosives particulates and vapors with or without physical contact and in real-time. The QS-HS150 can detect vapors and nanogram quantities of explosives particulates for explosives substances considered to be threats. The substances include military and commercial explosives, improvised and homemade explosives, and propellants and taggants.

The QS-H150 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly. The system requires no user intervention and no calibration cons! umables. The detection process begins with the collection of a sample with its vortex collector. After collection, the sample is ionized photonically and analyzed using ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) technology. The presence of a threat substance is indicated by a visible and audible alarms. The threat substance is then identified and displayed on the integrated liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. When detecting a threat substance, the QS-H150 rapidly alarms. This real-time detection limits equipment contamination and allows for fast clear-down.

Quantum Sniffer QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector

QS-B220 Benchtop Explosives and Narcotics Detector uses dual IMS with non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial, and improvised explosives as well as narcotics. The QS-B220 uses a sample trap which is wiped on the surface to be interrogated for explosives or narcotics particles.

The QS-B220 has automatic and continuous self-calibration. It monitors its environment, senses changes that would affect its accuracy, and re-calibrates accordingly.

Quantum Sniffer TM QS-Hx Portable Explosives Detector

The Company is focusing in developing a next-generation handheld detector that will use dual IMS non-radioactive ionization for the detection and identification of a range of military, commercial and improvised explosives, as well as narcotics. The QS-Hx will have automatic and continuous self-calibration, multi-level password-protected data security and will include a data management interface with data export to a network for recordkeeping, providing a link with the central command centers and logistics systems used by carriers.

Miniature Mass Spectrometer

The Company acquisition of Ion Metrics enabled it to obtain miniaturized quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) detector technology. The QMS detector is roughly the size of an AA battery and has low manufactur! ing costs! . When used in conjunction with an IMS, the QMS detector senses the molecular weight of the chemical species resulting in an orthogonal detection method in which a more fundamental characteristic of a substance is measured. It is developing interfaces for integrating the QMS detector into its future products.

Hyphenated Detectors

Depending on the application and the number of interfering background chemicals, it may be necessary to incorporate additional orthogonal detection methods. The combination of multiple sensors in series is known as employing hyphenated methods. By measuring different properties of the same species, interferents are separated from target species for a deterministic detection and identification and have minimum rates of false alarms. It is developing hyphenated systems employing conventional ion mobility, differential mobility and quadrupole mass spectrometry. As of June 30, 2012, it has one patent issued in real-time trace detection by IMS and QMS and two hyphenated system patents pending.

The Company competes with Morpho Detection, Inc., NucTech Company Limited and Smiths Detection, Inc.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Con-way Inc. (Con-way), incorporated in 1958, provides transportation, logistics and supply-chain management services for a wide range of manufacturing, industrial and retail customers. Con-way's business units operate in regional and transcontinental less-than-truckload and full-truckload freight transportation, contract logistics and supply-chain management, multimodal freight brokerage, and trailer manufacturing. Con-way is divided into four segments: Freight, Logistics, Truckload, and Other. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Freight operated 286 freight service centers, of which 144 were owned and 142 were leased. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Freight owned and operated approximately 9,200 tractors and 26,400 trailers, including tractors held under capital lease agreements.

Freight

The Freight segment consists of the operating results of the Con-way Freight business unit. Con-way Freight is a less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier that utilize s a network of freight service centers to provide day-definite regional, inter-regional and transcontinental less-than-truckload freight services throughout North America. LTL carriers transport shipments from multiple shippers utilizing a network of freight service centers combined with a fleet of line-haul and pickup-and-delivery tractors and trailers. Freight is picked up from customers and consolidated for shipment at the originating service center. Freight is consolidated for transportation to the destination service centers or freight assembly centers. At Freight assembly centers, freight from various service centers can be reconsolidated for transportation to other freight assembly centers or destination service centers. From the destination service center, the freight is delivered to the customer. Typically, LTL shipments weigh between 100 and 15,000 pounds. In 2011, Con-way Fr! eight's average weight per shipment was 1,305 pounds.

Logistics

The Logistics segment consists of the operating results o! f the Menlo Worldwide Logistics business unit. Menlo Worldwide Logistics develops contract-logistics solutions, which can include managing complex distribution networks, and providing supply-chain engineering and consulting, and multimodal freight brokerage services. Menlo Worldwide Logistics' supply-chain management offerings are primarily related to transportation-management and contract-warehousing services. Transportation management refers to the management of asset-based carriers and third-party transportation providers for customers' inbound and outbound supply-chain needs through the use of logistics management systems to consolidate, book and track shipments. Contract warehousing refers to the optimization and operation of warehouses for customers using technology and warehouse-management systems to reduce inventory carrying costs and supply-chain cycle times. For several customers, contract-warehousing operations include light assembly or kitting operations.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. At December 31, 2011, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated 76 warehouses in North America, of which 55 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 21 were leased or owned by clients of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. Outside of North America, Menlo Worldwide Logistics operated an additional 63 warehouses! , of whic! h 48 were leased by Menlo Worldwide Logistics and 15 were leased or owned by clients. Men lo Worldwide Logistics owns and operates a small fleet of tr! actors an! d trailers to support its operations, but primarily utilizes third-party transportation providers for the movement of customer shipments.

Truckload

The Truckload segment consists of the operating results of the Con-way Truckload business unit. Con-way Truckload is a full-truckload motor carrier that utilizes a fleet of tractors and trailers to provide short- and long-haul, asset-based transportation services throughout North America. Con-way Truckload provides dry-van transportation services to manufacturing, industrial and retail customers while using single drivers as well as two-person driver teams over long-haul routes, with each trailer containing only one customer's goods. This origin-to-destination freight movement limits intermediate handling and is not dependent on the same network of locations utilized by LTL carriers. On average, Con-way Truckload transports shipments more than 800 miles from origin to destination. Under its regional s ervice offering, Con-way Truckload transports truckload shipments of less than 600 miles, including local-area service for truckload shipments of less than 100 miles.

Con-way Truckload offers through-trailer service into and out of Mexico through all major gateways in Texas, Arizona and California. For a shipment with an origin or destination in Mexico, Con-way Truckload provides transportation for the domestic portion of the freight move, and a Mexican carrier provides the pick-up, linehaul and delivery services within Mexico. At December 31, 2011, Con-way Truckload operated five owned terminals with bulk fuel, tractor and trailer parking, and in some cases, equipment maintenance and washing facilities. In addition, Con-way Truckload also utilizes various drop yards for temporary trailer storage throughout the United States. At December 31, 2011, Con-way! Truckloa! d owned and operated approximately 2,700 tractors and 8,000 trailers, including tractors held under capital lease agreements.

Other

! The Other! reporting segment consists of the operating results of Road Systems, a trailer manufacturer, and certain corporate activities for which the related income or expense has not been allocated to other reporting segments, including results related to corporate re-insurance activities and corporate properties. Road Systems primarily manufactures and refurbishes trailers for Con-way Freight and Con-way Truckload.

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in  2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

Con-way Inc.(CNW) issued a weaker-than-expected profit outlook for the fourth quarter after the trucking company encountered challenges at its Con-way Freight and Menlo Worldwide Logistics operations. The company’s shares declined 6.1% to $38.89 premarket.

Shares of Atlas Air have plunged 15% to $37.13 today at 1:48 p.m., on what has been a lousy day for shippers and those involved with shipping. FedEx (FDX) has dropped 0.7% following UPS’s miss.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).

Advisors' Opinion:

It does not matter if it a penny stock, all that matters is whether or not my reasoning is correct. However, in June the Global Depositary Shares (GDS) will undergo a 60:1 reverse split (pending shareholder approval) and the stock will no longer be a penny stock. Unfortunately the reverse split will occur after the June 12, 2014 record date for determining the persons and/or entities liable to the Depositary for the annual fee of $0.02 per Global Depositary shares for depositary services. This is an enormous fee for GDS shares, but one that I will pay due to the extreme undervaluation. Just remember that if you purchase the GDS shares on or before June 12th you are effectively paying an extra $0.02 per share.

The computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithm assists the radiologist as they search for polyps in the CT scan image data. The radiologist uses the visualization software to review the patient CT scan images on the screen and searches for polyps (potentially pre-cancerous lesions on the wall of the colon). After a full review, the radiologist then activates the Medicsight ColonCAD software, which immediately displays CAD marks on the images, drawing the radiologist attention to potential polyps and other regions of interest. The radiologist then assesses each marked region in order to make the final decision as to the presence or absence of a polyp.

In addition to the computer aided detection so! ftware applications, Medicsight has developed an automated carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation device, MedicCO2LON. A patient undergoing a CT colon scan requires the colon to be insufflated (distended) with either CO2 gas or room air administered prior to the acquisition of their CT colonography images. Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).
